    EIBF exists to empower engineers and scientists to become tomorrow’s business leaders. But while their impact was growing, their digital presence needed to evolve.

    Unifying Purpose Through Smart Design

    Over time, three distinct websites had taken shape, each designed for a specific function:

    EIBF.org.uk and SMF.org.uk delivered essential information but felt static and disconnected.

    EIBC.org.uk provided robust tools for competition entries, yet operated in isolation.

    The experience was disjointed for users and difficult to manage behind the scenes. As EIBF broadened its mission to support both engineers and scientists, the need for a unified, future-focused platform became clear.

    This wasn’t just a redesign. It was a strategic transformation, bringing together content, functionality, and community into one purposeful digital home.

    Designed for Flow, Built for Flexibility

    From scholarships to competitions, mentoring to donations, EIBF’s platform needed to do more than look good. It had to perform across multiple journeys, user types, and time-sensitive processes.

    • We developed a modular system on Craft CMS, giving EIBF full control over content while supporting a rich mix of functionality, including:
    • Competition workflows that adapt to each stage, from open submissions to judging to archival.
    • Secure voting portals, with role-based access for judges and dynamic views based on timing and competition phase.
    • Flexible entry management, allowing applicants to upload content, follow up, and track their progress.
    • Automated archiving, ensuring past competitions remain accessible without cluttering the current journey.
    • Integrated ecommerce, with Worldpay powering donations and campaigns like the Step Challenge.

     

    To elevate the user experience, we layered in subtle animation using Lottie files, along with bespoke transitions and micro-interactions, adding rhythm and energy without distracting from the content.

    Everything was crafted to balance sophistication with simplicity. A platform powerful behind the scenes, and effortless on the surface.

    Building with Purpose: Research-Driven Design

    To create a platform that truly served EIBF’s audiences, we began where all good design does: with listening.

    We conducted in-depth stakeholder workshops, surveys, and an analytics audit to uncover pain points, patterns, and opportunities. From this, we shaped a clear picture of the people we were designing for, current students, alumni, universities, and internal teams managing the process.

    With defined user personas and mapped journeys, we moved into structure and flow:

    • Information architecture that simplified navigation and surfaced the right content at the right time.
    • Low-fidelity wireframes to prototype functionality and test assumptions early.
    • High-fidelity designs that brought the experience to life, modern, intuitive, and tailored to each audience.

    Our approach was collaborative and iterative, ensuring every decision aligned with EIBF’s mission while making life easier for its users.

    At the heart of the platform is a dynamic competition engine, built to flex with EIBF’s evolving needs, and simplify complex processes into confident user journeys.

    What was once spread across three disconnected platforms is now one cohesive, intelligent ecosystem. Whether a student applying for a scholarship, a judge reviewing competition entries, or an alumnus revisiting case studies, the journey is now clear, intuitive, and unified.

    For the EIBF team, managing content, competitions, and communications is simpler and more streamlined, built to support growth, not just keep up with it.

    And most importantly, the new website reflects who EIBF is today: a future-focused charity supporting the next generation of engineers and scientists to lead, innovate, and grow.
